“Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. ” – St. Paul
Late winter is a season for this kind of hope. We do not yet have warmth, beauty, and bounty of spring and summer, but we are anxiously awaiting them. Here at 5 Loaves Farm, in anticipation of the warmer months we have sprung into action preparing for the coming growing season.
Trays of lettuce, leeks, onions, broccoli, cabbage, kale, collards, and evens some basil, pepper and eggplant seedlings have been started in our seedling nursery. With warmer days and more sunshine we have also been able to start harvesting overwintered greens from our hoophouses.
Another of the first foods we produce on the farm each year is maple syrup! We are again working with the City of Buffalo and Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to collect map sap from sugar maple trees in Delaware Park to produce a small amount of maple syrup. This Saturday, you can get a taste of our syrup and see our urban maple syrup production in action at two events. On March 24th we will be at the House of Grace (175 Potomac Ave) from 9am-Noon, for our annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. You can come support the farm with your donation, by picking up some 5LF shirts, sweatshirts, stickers and hats, or by entering our raffle to win fun prizes from the farm!
That afternoon at 1:30pm we will also be in Delaware Park, meeting at the Rumsey Woods Shelter to give a tour and full demonstration of how we are making maple syrup from sugar maple trees right here in the city.
The funds we raise, and the food we grow and sell, also goes to give hope to others in our community. Throughout the year 5 Loaves Farm works with youth from our neighborhood to give them educational and economic opportunities. As they help us tap maple trees, or grow our seedlings for this spring’s plantings, we build community, build awareness of how our actions affect the world around us, and give our youth employees valuable job skills and experience as well.
So this weekend, the first official weekend of spring, the wait is over! Come join 5 Loaves Farm as we make maple syrup and raise funds to continue the work of sowing hope in our community!!
