As farmers, we work hard planning, planting, weeding, watering, fighting off pests, all to ensure a good harvest.  However, there are realities that are beyond our control; there are larger forces at work that cause a seed to sprout, that drive the weather patterns, that cause a harvest to be bountiful or sparse.  The fact that we are able hold a ripe strawberry in our hands is the result of much more than just a farmer’s hard work.  The sharing of our “first fruits” teaches us this humility, and teaches us to look beyond ourselves, beyond our own efforts and rewards. Growing healthy soil is how good farmers grow healthy food. In urban gardens there are concerns about soil contamination, but growers here in Buffalo have been partnering with researchers and policy makers to come up with best practices to build safe healthy soil to grow that healthy food in. On Saturday, May 11th, from 2-7pm, 5 Loaves Farm invites you to join us for a conversation with local experts as we build soil together in our gardens and share dinner together.

Waking up. Stretching. Preparing our minds and bodies for action. That’s what March feels like to me. A good layer of snow is on the ground and temperatures are still sitting below freezing, yet there is anticipation in the air. We know that by the end of this month we will be seeing more green than white, the temperature will slowly continue to rise, and we will soon be able to start working outside again. Yet, we already have hints of this movement even now, at the beginning of the month. We are in the process of planting seeds indoors, the sprouts of garlic can be seen poking out of the snow, and the sap in the maple trees is beginning to run! Continue reading “Thursday, March 7”

blog titlesWe are excited to announce that the 2019 CSA farm share signup is now open! Each year we try to adjust the CSA program, growing more or less of certain crops, streamlining our process, and increasing our neighbors’ access to healthy food. After listening to the feedback we received this year we are making small tweaks to the amount of zucchini and varieties of broccoli we grow. We are also excited about a much larger change in the CSA design with the addition of a sliding scale model for CSA payments.

Knowing the farmer who grew your food is the best way to know if you are getting the freshest and healthiest food available.  Food today comes with all kinds of certifications and labels, like “non-GMO”, “organic”, or “all-natural”.  These can be misleading and/or confusing.  It has been suggested that the most important certification you can look for in your food is “face certification”; can you look into the face of the people who grew this produce when you buy it?!
